What I Use Each Tool For (Weekly Breakdown)

Claude Pro — Daily

Primary use: drafting article content from a brief. Secondary uses: writing meta descriptions and title variations, suggesting internal linking opportunities, reviewing published articles for thin sections, and generating FAQ content. I open Claude before I open any other tool.

ChatGPT Plus — 3–4x/Week

Current product pricing checks (via web browsing), technical questions where I want current information, DALL·E 3 for the rare image I need, and Python scripts for simple data processing. Not my primary writing tool.

Ahrefs — Every Article

Every keyword gets run through Ahrefs Keyword Explorer before I decide to write about it. I check: monthly search volume, KD score, top-ranking pages, and whether the SERP is dominated by Reddit/YouTube (hard to displace with a new site).

Surfer SEO — Every Article Before Publishing

I paste every draft into Surfer's Content Editor, target score: 70+. If it's below 60, I either add missing semantic keywords or restructure the piece. I don't publish below 65. This process adds 15–20 minutes per article and is worth every minute.

Make.com — Background Automation

Three active automations: (1) new keyword from Ahrefs export → formatted brief template → saved to Notion. (2) Weekly GSC data pull → formatted performance summary → email digest. (3) Monthly affiliate revenue aggregation across PartnerStack and Impact → single spreadsheet summary.

Tools I Cancelled This Year

  • Jasper AI ($49/mo): Replaced by Claude. Identical output category at less than half the cost.
  • Semrush ($119/mo): Ahrefs Starter at $29 covers everything I need at this stage of the site.
  • Grammarly Premium ($15/mo): Claude's editing pass is better for blog-style content.

Considering Adding

  • Screaming Frog Pro: Once the site hits 500+ pages. Currently using the free tier and it's sufficient.
  • Lasso Link Management: Once I have 50+ active affiliate links. Building a spreadsheet now but will need proper management eventually.
  • ConvertKit: Email list building isn't a priority at this traffic level, but I'll add it once organic sessions hit 500/month. Free up to 1,000 subscribers so it's a zero-cost add until scale.
  • Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity: UX heatmaps on high-traffic articles to optimize CTA placement. Clarity is free — will add once there's meaningful traffic to analyze.

How I Evaluate Adding a New Tool

Every tool addition gets run through this filter before I pay for it:

  1. Does it save more than 1 hour/week? At a target hourly value of $100+, a tool needs to save meaningful time to justify cost.
  2. Is there a free alternative that's 80% as good? If yes, I use the free version until the 20% gap becomes the limiting factor on the business.
  3. Can I test it for free first? No free trial = I look for another option first. The SaaS space has too much competition to pay for blind faith.
  4. Does it solve a current problem, not a future one? I try not to buy tools speculatively. When I feel the bottleneck, I buy the fix.

The Full Operating Budget Breakdown

Claude Pro$20$240AI Writing
ChatGPT Plus$20$240AI Research
Surfer SEO$89$1,068On-Page SEO
Ahrefs$29$348Keyword Research

Make.com, GitHub Pages, GSC$0$0Automation / Hosting
Total$159$1,908

At $1,908/year in operating costs, this site needs to generate roughly $160/month to break even. The goal for 2026 is 10x that figure — $1,600/month by December. Everything in the stack is optimized around producing high-quality, rankable content faster than the old manual approach allowed. Track the progress in monthly income reports →
