- Google Search Console: Non-negotiable. Tracks which queries you rank for, click-through rates, indexing status, and Core Web Vitals. The most important SEO data source you have.
- Google Analytics 4: Traffic source breakdown, user behavior, conversion tracking. Free forever.
- Ahrefs Webmaster Tools: Free version of Ahrefs for sites you own. Site audit, some keyword data, backlink overview. Significant free tier.
- Google Keyword Planner: Rough volume data, trend lines, related keyword suggestions. Requires a Google Ads account but not actual ad spend.
Ahrefs — Best for Keyword Research

Ahrefs is the SEO tool I use most. The keyword research database is the most comprehensive I've tested, the keyword difficulty scores are the most accurate for predicting real-world ranking difficulty, and the competitor analysis features (Content Gap, Top Pages) are unmatched for building out a content strategy.
For affiliate sites, the features I use most:
- Keywords Explorer: Any seed keyword → full keyword universe with volume, KD, CPC, and SERP preview
- Content Gap: See exactly what keywords competitors rank for that you don't
- Site Audit: Automated technical SEO scan with prioritized issues

The Starter plan at $29/month is limited but functional for a solo operator. The Standard plan at $99/month unlocks the full keyword database — worth it once you're publishing consistently.
Ahrefs — The Keyword Research Tool I Rely On
Start with Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free) for your own site data, then upgrade to a paid plan once you need full keyword research. The Starter plan at $29/month is the most affordable entry point to the full tool.
Surfer SEO — Best for On-Page Optimization

Surfer SEO's Content Editor is the on-page optimization tool I use for every article before publishing. You paste your draft in, select your target keyword, and Surfer scores the content against the top-ranking pages — flagging missing NLP terms, heading structure issues, and word count gaps.
The ROI case: one additional ranking article that earns $50/month in affiliate commissions pays back the $89/month subscription in under two months. If Surfer helps even one article rank that otherwise wouldn't, it's covered.
The weakness: the price is steep for someone just starting out. I'd recommend adding Surfer after you have at least 10 articles live and are publishing consistently.
Surfer SEO — On-Page Optimization Before Every Publish
I run every article through Surfer's Content Editor before publishing. The Content Score gives an objective read on keyword coverage vs. top competitors.
Rank Math — Best Free On-Page Plugin (WordPress)

If you're running WordPress, Rank Math is the best free on-page SEO plugin available. It handles title/meta tag management, schema markup generation, XML sitemap creation, and basic on-page optimization scoring — all free.
For static HTML sites (like this one), Rank Math doesn't apply — you manage meta tags and schema directly in your HTML.
Screaming Frog — Best for Technical Audits

Screaming Frog is a desktop site crawler that audits your site's technical health. It finds broken links, redirect chains, duplicate title tags, missing meta descriptions, pages blocked from crawling, and dozens of other technical issues that silently hurt rankings.
The free version handles up to 500 URLs — enough for most small affiliate sites. I run a full crawl on every site I build before launching and quarterly thereafter.

Start at $0 and add tools only when you outgrow what you have. Most new affiliate sites don't need Surfer SEO or Ahrefs Standard until they have 20+ articles live and consistent traffic.
