The AI SEO Stack That Actually Works

SEO in 2026 hasn't changed as much as the hype suggests. The fundamentals are the same: target keywords with search volume and manageable difficulty, publish content that satisfies intent, get some links, and wait. AI accelerates the research and content production steps but doesn't replace them.

Keyword Research — Ahrefs + Claude

Ahrefs ($29/month) — Keyword Data

Keyword difficulty scores, search volume, SERP analysis, and competitor gap reports. The Starter plan is enough for most solo affiliate sites. I use it to find every keyword before writing a single article.

Try Ahrefs →Affiliate link

Once I have a keyword list from Ahrefs, I use Claude to cluster related keywords, identify content gaps vs competitors, and suggest angles for each piece. Claude doesn't replace Ahrefs data — it helps me make faster decisions from that data.

Content Optimization — Surfer SEO

Surfer SEO ($89/month) — On-Page Scoring

The Content Editor benchmarks your draft against the top-ranking pages for your target keyword. It identifies missing NLP entities, heading gaps, and word count issues before you publish. I don't publish without scoring above 70 in Surfer.

Technical SEO — Screaming Frog (Free Tier) + GSC

Screaming Frog's free version crawls up to 500 URLs and catches the most common technical issues: broken links, redirect chains, missing meta descriptions, and duplicate content. For a site under 500 pages, the free tier covers everything you need.

Google Search Console is non-negotiable — it shows you exactly which keywords are generating impressions, which pages have crawl errors, and which need Core Web Vitals fixes. Free and irreplaceable.

Link Building — No AI Tool Yet Worth It

Honest take: I haven't found an AI link-building tool that produces meaningful results at the solo operator level. Pitchbox and similar tools are designed for agencies sending thousands of emails per month. At this stage, the best link building for a new site is: publish exceptional content, submit to relevant directories, and guest post manually in your niche.

Analytics & Rank Monitoring

Tracking keyword rankings tells you where to invest effort. Ahrefs Rank Tracker is the paid option; for a free alternative, Google Search Console's "Performance" report shows your average position for every query you rank for. I check it weekly and flag any article that drops more than 3 positions month-over-month.

Microsoft Clarity (free) is the most underused tool in affiliate SEO. It provides heatmaps, session recordings, and scroll depth data that tells you whether readers are actually engaging with your content — or hitting the back button. A page with good rankings but high rage-click rate usually has a UX issue, not an SEO issue.

Site Speed & Core Web Vitals

Google weights Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP) in rankings. You don't need to obsess over these if your site is simple, but you do need to make sure you're not actively failing them. Free audit tools:

  • PageSpeed Insights: Google's own tool — run every page template here. Flags image sizing, render-blocking scripts, and server response issues.
  • GTmetrix: More detailed waterfall charts that help diagnose specific bottleneck assets.
  • Cloudflare free tier: CDN + caching that fixes most speed issues for static sites automatically.

For this site: static HTML on GitHub Pages + Cloudflare CDN. No JavaScript frameworks. PageSpeed score is 97 mobile. You don't need a complex site to score well.

Schema Markup — Free but High Leverage

Structured data (JSON-LD schema) tells Google explicitly what your page is about and can earn rich results in SERPs — star ratings on review articles, FAQ dropdowns, HowTo steps. For affiliate sites, the most useful schema types are: Article, FAQPage, Product (for reviews), and HowTo.

I add schema manually to article templates. There's no paid tool needed for this — the Schema.org Validator is free, and Google's Rich Results Test (also free) shows whether your markup qualifies for enhanced SERP features.
